Project Manager - Substations
Join JSM Group to design and install power, digital, and specialist networks that keep critical industries running — grow your skills, impact, and career with us.
JSM Group designs and builds the power networks and digital infrastructure that clients across the UK, Europe and beyond depend on — from high-voltage grid connections and critical utilities to data centres and renewable energy. Our civil, power and digital engineers work under one roof, giving clients one team from design to energisation, with the technical, commercial and consenting risk managed from day one.
Belonging here isn’t accidental — it’s engineered. Our values of personal responsibility, sound judgment and drive, shape how we work, and you’ll get the work to stretch you and the support to develop fast. See life at JSM at careers.jsmgroup.com.
ABOUT THE TEAM
You'll join our Power division, a fast-growing team delivering complex HV infrastructure across the UK — high-value (£5m+) projects for DNOs, IDNOs and major clients including data centres and industrial users. You'll report to the Delivery Interface Manager and work with internal delivery teams, design consultants and client-side engineers.
THE ROLE
This isn't a pure design role it's about managing the design process, the risk and the programme. You'll coordinate design, manage stakeholder interfaces and support early procurement decisions, playing a key part in stabilising and driving live projects forward.
What you'll do
• Manage the design process from initiation to full approval, moving designs through each approval stage efficiently
• Coordinate internal delivery teams, design consultants, DNOs/IDNOs and client-side engineers, keeping design and delivery aligned
• Track RFIs, approvals and technical submissions, spotting risks early and driving them to resolution
• Support early procurement decisions so projects are set up properly before delivery starts
• Act as the key interface with DNO, IDNO and client technical teams, making sure works meet the relevant standards, specifications and JSM's safety-first culture
Good to know: a mix of hybrid and site-based working on projects across the UK
Essential
• Proven delivery of HV electrical infrastructure projects at 11kV–132kV+, on live projects rather than purely design environments
• A strong understanding of DNO/IDNO design approval processes
• Experience coordinating design, procurement and delivery in utilities, power or infrastructure
• Commercial awareness of programme, cost and procurement risk
• Strong coordination and communication skills, managing multiple technical and non-technical stakeholders
Nice to have
• An electrical engineering degree, HNC or equivalent
• Experience with ICPs, DNOs or Tier 1 contractors
• Exposure to data centre or large industrial connections
• Experience supporting projects from concept through to commissioning
You'll thrive here if you
• Are already delivering HV projects as a project manager, a design engineer who's moved into delivery, or a senior engineer running the full lifecycle
• Step in, take ownership and unblock issues quickly
• Are frustrated by slow decision-making and poor handovers, and want to fix them
• Are straight with people about risk and programme, especially under pressure
Don't tick every box? Apply anyway. We look at what you've delivered and what you're capable of, not just the list.
WHAT WE OFFER
• Pay & reward — competitive salary, performance-linked bonus and car allowance (where applicable), 4% matched pension
• Time off — 28 days' annual leave plus bank holidays
• Health & wellbeing — BUPA health cash plan, Benenden Health, employee assistance programme
• Career growth — funded training through our Training Centre and Competency Cloud, professional memberships and a clear route to chartership
• Extras — electric car salary-sacrifice scheme
