Business & Technical Support Assistant
About the Company
JSM are a specialist electrical and civil engineering company delivering the design, installation, and commissioning of Extra High Voltage (EHV) cable systems and substations across transmission and distribution networks. We work alongside grid operators, utilities, and major infrastructure clients to deliver critical power projects safely and to the highest technical standards.
Role Overview
We are looking for a motivated and highly organised Business & Technical Support Assistant to provide administrative and coordination support to our engineering and business development teams. This role is primarily focused on keeping our EHV cable and substation projects running smoothly managing documentation, correspondence, reporting, and client liaison with the opportunity to build technical knowledge of high-voltage infrastructure along the way.
This is an excellent entry point into the electrical infrastructure industry for someone with strong administrative or coordination skills who is enthusiastic about building a career in a fast-paced, project-driven environment. No prior technical background is required — full training and support will be provided to help you develop your industry knowledge over time.
Key Responsibilities
• Manage and file engineering and business development correspondence, ensuring traceability and version control across project documentation systems.
• Liaise with clients, subcontractors, and utility representatives to help coordinate and respond to information requests.
• Assist in the preparation of progress reports, project trackers, and presentation materials for internal and client-facing meetings.
• Provide day-to-day administrative and coordination support to the Business Development department, working with clients on EHV cable installation and substation construction projects.
• Help prepare and organise documentation for Budget Estimates and Formal Offer applications submitted to the DNOs (Distribution Network Operators).
• Support the team in assembling technical submittals, RFIs (Requests for Information), and technical PQQs (Pre-Qualification Questionnaires), under guidance from senior colleagues.
• Assist with organising and referencing high-level budget cost information for EHV cable installation and substation construction projects, working alongside more experienced team members.
• Help the engineering team keep track of relevant technical standards and reference materials, including ENA Engineering Recommendations and IEC/BS standards — no prior technical knowledge required, just an eye for detail and organisation.
• Be aware of, and follow, the Health, Safety and Sustainability (HSS) requirements relevant to your role.
Essential Requirements
• Experience in an administrative, coordination, or customer-facing support role (any industry) — experience within utilities, power, or construction is a bonus but not required.
• Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook); comfortable learning new document management systems (e.g. SharePoint, or similar).
• Excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple workstreams simultaneously.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence to liaise professionally with engineers, clients, and subcontractors.
• Flexible, adaptable, and highly motivated with a 'can do' attitude.
• Able to work independently with minimum supervision, and as part of a team, to meet deadlines.
• Able to work under pressure without compromising quality, accuracy, or attention to detail.
• A genuine enthusiasm for starting a career in the electrical infrastructure industry, and a willingness to learn.
Desirable
• City & Guilds 2304 qualification in Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline — or an interest in working towards one.
• Familiarity with EHV cable systems (132kV and above), substations, or transmission network projects.
• Exposure to a DNO, TNO, or ICP (Independent Connection Provider) environment.
• Awareness of relevant standards and regulations (e.g. ENA TS 09-12, G99, CDM 2015, BS 7671).
• Any experience in quoting or costing.
What We Offer
• Competitive salary commensurate with experience.
• A structured route into the electrical infrastructure industry, with full training and support to build your technical knowledge.
• Exposure to high-profile transmission and grid connection projects from day one.
• Supportive team environment with structured career development.
• [Additional benefits as applicable — pension, travel allowance, training support, etc.]
We are an equal opportunities employer and welcome applications from all suitably qualified individuals regardless of background.
