The Role
As a Principal Design Primary Engineer, you will lead the technical output of the Design Engineers and undertake your own projects, which will be of a complex or high value nature. Reporting to the Design Manager/lead design coordinator, you will be involved in the coaching and training of individuals whilst keeping up to date with industry standards. You will promote value engineering and authorise the design checks of others.
Job Description lead engineer:
Lead a team of 2-3 engineers and CAD.
Ensure projects remain on track and deliver required milestones.
Coordinate with project managers and the Head of Engineering.
Provide status updates for each project.
Review and approve senior engineer design deliverables.
Oversee annual performance appraisals and development activities for team members, and report outcomes to the Head of Engineering.
Key Responsibilities
Develop concept design for tender stage and detail stage.
Demonstrated track record leading the Heading team of engineers and reporting on design issues.
Manage multiple concurrent projects.
Identify design solutions that are customer-focused.
Resolve design issues in collaboration with project managers and design managers.
Chair internal design meetings with a risk-focused perspective.
Present designs at client DTM meetings and explain technical design details.
Review design work and support junior engineers to develop primary design engineering deliverables, including specifications, calculations, and related outputs.
Knowledge of cable design up to 132kV is desirable but not essential, including cable terminations and estimation of cable lengths.
Report progress and manage working hours.
Produce compliant designs in accordance with customer requirements and industry standards.
Attend client office visits when required.
Understand, apply, and train others on ENA, DNO, and IDNO G81 design standards, as well as engineering recommendations and BS and IEC standards.
Coach and support junior team members through client interactions and meetings.
Prepare job-specific cost estimates for variations and contract changes.
Approve design checks for others (CAD technicians and primary engineers).
Promote value engineering and improved ways of working within the team.
Monitor and maintain design standards.
Ensure all design work is delivered in line with NERS accreditation requirements.
Escalate problems in a timely manner to minimise business exposure.
Experience & Qualities
Essential:
HND or degree in an electrical discipline
Experience of 132kV ,66,33kV and 11kV substation design
Take the design forward in case design team member is not available.
LV design to a high level of quality as per BS 7671
Experience of earthing designs across multiple DNO regions
Proven track record of authorising design checks across multiple DNO regions
Demonstratable competency in the physical and practical application of electrical installations
Ability to effectively communicate design requirements to clients, Project Managers and site teams
Desirable:
Ability to recognise gaps in business processes and develop and implement new systems to allow the effective delivery of projects
Working knowledge and experience of private electricity networks , substations for Data centre , solar farms , Battery storage
Ability to recognise gaps in own or others competencies, be it technical or soft skills
400kV/275kV substation desirable
Ability to coach and train junior engineers
Ability to multitask and prioritise own complex workload with needs of the team
