Our Indian design function is rapidly expanding, and this role is critical to ensuring we deliver safe, compliant, and scalable infrastructure for our clients.

You’ll lead a high-performing team of 25–30 design professionals, delivering substation and HV connection designs across multiple workstreams.

SCOPE OF ROLE

As Head of Design, you’ll take full ownership of design delivery across our portfolio, covering substations, cable networks, and overhead lines up to 400kV. You'll develop and lead a multi-disciplinary design office, manage the design lifecycle from tender to commissioning, and ensure alignment with client expectations and compliance standards.

This is a senior leadership role for a seasoned engineering professional with deep utility experience, offering high visibility, autonomy, and impact.

HOW YOU`LL SUCCEED

🔌 Design Leadership & Delivery

• Oversee design work for substations, overhead lines, and cable routes (up to 400kV)

• Present proposals, technical reports, and updates to senior leadership and clients

• Develop and manage design programmes from the tender stage to execution

• Deliver projects on time and within budget, ensuring client satisfaction

👷 Team Development & Management

• Build and manage a 25–30 person design team, improving capabilities and mentoring talent

• Conduct appraisals, manage performance, and oversee training & career development

• Ensure team readiness for Principal Designer responsibilities under CDM

• Maintain high standards in quality, safety, and professional growth

📑 Operational Excellence & Governance

• Monitor CVRs, budgets, and schedules—reporting regularly to leadership

• Lead project meetings and ensure cross-functional alignment with operations

• Support project planning, ensure compliance with grid codes and environmental regulations

• Travel to client offices or project sites as required

WHAT IT TAKES

✅ Essential Experience

• 15–20 years’ experience in an electrical utility design role (substations, HV connections)

• Previous leadership of design teams, ideally within a distribution network operator or consultancy

• Strong familiarity with National Grid codes, CDM, and Indian regulatory frameworks

• Proven ability to manage multiple complex projects across various locations

🎓 Qualifications

• HNC / Degree in Electrical, Civil, or Protection Engineering

• Experience delivering designs up to 400kV (132kV essential)
