Electrical Engineer
THE TEAM
You’ll be joining the Power Operations team at JSM Group, where we specialise in delivering high-quality power network services to major clients. As part of this collaborative team, you’ll play a vital role in the electrical engineering design and delivery of projects, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, and driving project success.
SCOPE OF ROLE
The Electrical Engineer is responsible for the electrical design, engineering, and delivery of HV and EHV substation projects up to 132kV, in line with client scope and specifications. This includes producing detailed single-line diagrams and design documentation, selecting appropriate equipment and components, and ensuring compliance with applicable standards and safety regulations. The role also involves coordination with civil, structural, and building services disciplines, and provides technical support across the full project lifecycle from tender through to commissioning.
HOW YOU’LL SUCCEED
Review tender documents, interpret requirements, and work with colleagues to develop the technical concept and approach.
Identify and anticipate potential technical and project-related risks.
Liaise with the civil engineering department (providing route data) to obtain utility records and requirements from the relevant authorities.
Liaise with procurement to source electrical components, switchgear, and materials, and obtain subcontractor pricing.
Prepare single-line diagrams, calculations, and technical designs from first principles for planning, budgeting, and estimating purposes. Keep technical documentation up to date with current standards, components, and market pricing.
Liaise with Project and Delivery Managers to define scope, programme, resource requirements, and technical approach, including site surveys where required.
Support tender submissions, including technical evaluation, negotiation, and review of subcontractor offers and enquiries.
Final technical review and sign-off with Divisional Director / Senior Management prior to bid submission.
Support all technical activities pre- and post-contract award, including attendance at project meetings.
Handover of successfully awarded projects to the delivery team as part of the Project Pre-Start meeting, including detailed technical documentation.
WHAT IT TAKES
Methodical and structured approach to problem-solving
Strong knowledge of electrical engineering, in particular utility networks and substations
Excellent problem-solving skills
Good analytical and technical assessment skills
Excellent communication and negotiation skills
Ability to absorb complex information and assess requirements
Competent in the use of MS Excel & Word; MS Project knowledge desirable but not essential
Trustworthiness and discretion when handling confidential information
Self-motivated with the ability to work effectively as part of a team
Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent qualification, or a minimum of 5 years’ experience in a similar role within the utilities sector
Competent in the use of MS Word & Excel
