Junior SHEQ Adviser

SCOPE OF ROLE
This is an exciting opportunity for an early-career professional or recent graduate with a passion for health, safety, environment, or quality disciplines. You will work alongside experienced SHEQ professionals, developing your technical expertise while playing an active role in supporting operational sites and ensuring compliance with SHEQ standards. The role offers great scope for development, training, and hands-on experience in the utilities and infrastructure sectors.
The role will involve occasional weekend and/or night work and travel between sites, predominantly in the South East but occasionally further afield.
HOW YOU'LL SUCCEED
- Undertake relevant training & development activity to build technical expertise and experience to enable career progression within JSM.
- Support the UK SHEQ Team across the Communications, Power and Gas operational sites.
- Support the provision of professional advice and solutions, ensuring compliance with legislation and best practice.
- Develop and maintain effective and collaborative relationship with operational managers/supervisors, employees, contractors and clients.
- Support the provision of independent assurance (through regular audits and inspection) and advice on all SHEQ related matters. Ensuring that all requirements of the integrated management system are followed accordingly by each site/contract.
- Provide support for compiling, reviewing and revising project SHEQ documentation and welfare set up, which can include, CPP’s / QMP’s / Risk Registers / Method Statements / Risk Assessments / Emergency Plans etc: where applicable
- Support the comprehensive Investigation of all accidents / incidents / utility damages, establish the root causes, and necessary preventative measures.
- Discharge your specific duties for matters regarding health, safety, welfare, environment and quality as defined in the company polices and, in any procedures, efficiently and effectively.
- Promote the proactive reporting of near misses, hazards and observations throughout the company
- Act as visible SHEQ champion, setting an example with SHEQ related behaviours and demonstration of JSM’s values.
- Support the evolution of our Integrated Management System and maintenance of ISO 9001, 14001, 45001 certifications.
- Undertake tasks as assigned by the SHEQ Manager.
WHAT IT TAKES
- NEBOSH Certificate.
- Some experience, or proven interest in Safety, Health, Environment or Quality disciplines
- Practical work experience, ideally in utilities/construction environment or demonstrable transferable skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments and present confidently.
- Good analytical and problem-solving skills
- Some knowledge of NRSWA and HSG47
- Some knowledge of ISO 14001 & 45001 and other industry accreditation.
- A flexible and dynamic approach, pragmatic, diplomatic but assertive manner, able to work alone but also a team player.
- Good organisational skills and attention to detail
- Computer literate and proficient in Microsoft Office software suite.
